Resume with no experience — your first job application

No paid roles yet? Projects, volunteering, and coursework can carry a one-page resume if you frame them as outcomes.

No experience is not empty — it is unlabeled experience.

First-job seekers often stare at a blank Experience section. Hiring managers for entry lanes expect that — but they still need proof you can show up, learn, and deliver something measurable. That proof lives in projects, volunteering, school leadership, and part-time work even if you do not call it a career yet.

Do not invent job titles. Do translate what you already did into bullets a shift supervisor or team lead would recognise.

What to put in each section

Summary: two lines — degree or school leaver path, top skills, and role target. Education: school, dates, relevant subjects or honours. Projects: personal builds, hackathons, coursework capstones — problem, tool, outcome.

Experience (optional rename on export): babysitting, lawn care, family business help, charity events — hours, responsibility, reliability. Skills: tools from projects, not a dictionary of every tutorial you watched.

Bullets without fake metrics

Honest numbers beat placeholders: customers served per shift, money raised, people mentored, bugs fixed, users on a demo. If you have no number, use scope: "Sole maintainer of club website" or "Only student operator on weekend shift."

DocuResume blocks export when placeholder tokens like [X%] remain — replace them or rephrase before you submit.

Where to apply first

Target entry lanes explicitly: retail, hospitality, admin, junior tech, traineeships. Use match score to see when a posting asks for two years of experience you do not have — skip and save energy.

Fewer, stronger applications with a tailored summary outperform hundreds of identical uploads.
