Thank-you email after an interview — subject lines that get opened

Thank you note after interview email subject lines, when to send, and a 5-line body that references one real moment — not a template paragraph.

Key takeaway

The subject line is the whole game on mobile: name the role, the day, and gratitude — then one specific proof in the body.

"Thank you note after interview email subject" is the query because people freeze on the first field. Recruiters skim phone inboxes. A vague "Following up" looks like spam; a novel-length subject gets truncated. Aim for 6–10 words that include thank you, the role, and optionally the date or interviewer first name.

Send within 24 hours of the conversation — same calendar day if you interviewed in the morning. A second note belongs only if they missed their own timeline, not 48 hours later out of anxiety.

Subject lines that work

Use one pattern and stop decorating. Examples you can copy and localise:

Thank you — [Role] interview, [Day]. Thank you, [First name] — [Team] conversation. Appreciate yesterday’s [Role] interview. Thanks for the [Company] [Role] discussion.

Subject lines to avoid

"Following up" with no role. "Just checking in." "Thank you!!!!!" "Interview recap" that sounds like a meeting-notes dump. Putting salary, visa status, or attachments in the subject. Writing the company name wrong — copy it from the calendar invite.

If two people interviewed you, send separate notes with the same subject pattern and a different one-line proof each heard. BCC nobody.

Five-line body

Action

1) Thank them for time and name the role. 2) One specific moment from the conversation (a product, a constraint, a case type). 3) One sentence that maps your proof to that moment — a metric already on your resume. 4) Restate interest. 5) Offer any promised follow-up (portfolio link, writing sample) and a clean sign-off with phone.

Action

Keep it under 120 words. Do not re-attach the full resume unless they asked; they already have it in the ATS. Do not recap your entire career.

After you hit send

Log the stage in your pipeline so the next follow-up has a date. Capture what you should have said the same day — that is how the next round improves, not the thank-you note. See the after-the-interview debrief.

Action

Rehearse the next sit on interview prep, keep stories in the practice hub, and keep the CV consistent via the resume builder. If they asked for a writing sample or letter, use the cover letter builder from the same profile facts.
