Hairstylist resume guide — cosmetologist, barber, and color specialist CVs
Write a hairstylist or licensed cosmetologist resume: chair volume, color systems, client book, state license, and ATS-safe layout for Indeed and salon groups.
A hairstylist resume (hairdresser / licensed cosmetologist / 美发师) has two readers: a salon owner who cares about your Saturday chair, and a group ATS that filters for state license class, infection control, and color-system names.
Pair this page with the beauty & salon CV guide for nails, spa, and beauty therapy. Barber-only applicants can steal structure here and the barber resume example for men’s grooming language.
Credentials and training that belong up front
United States: state cosmetology or barber license, license number, and expiration near contact. Indeed and ZipRecruiter ads often require "licensed cosmetologist" or "licensed barber" in the file. Name color houses (Wella, L’Oréal, Redken) only if you can mix and correct them in a tryout.
Australia: Certificate III in Hairdressing (or equivalent), apprenticeship employer, infection control, first aid.
APAC / 美容美发 studios: local practising certificates where required, and an English ATS-safe PDF for hotel or chain applications. Do not invent licence numbers. Apprentices and juniors: lead with modules completed and services you already take unsupervised — not a wish list of advanced color.
Summary and bullets that sound like a salon
Summary: title, years, salon type (color boutique, barber, hotel salon, Great Clips-style volume, or high-street), and peak volume. Example tone: "Licensed cosmetologist / senior hairstylist — color and cut chair — Saturday book of 10–12 — Wella color trained."
Bullets need owned verbs plus scope: clients per day, rebook %, colour correction outcomes, juniors trained, retail attach, event or bridal work. Prefer "Held a 12-client Saturday colour column" over "Responsible for providing excellent hair services."
Skip corporate jargon. Station and service names travel better than synergy.
Sample bullet patterns
Volume: "Ran a colour-and-cut column averaging [N] clients on Saturday; kept wait time under [Y] minutes between appointments."
Colour: "Completed [N] colour corrections per month using [system]; documented formulas for repeat clients."
Retail: "Attached homecare on [X]% of colour services; hit retail target [N] consecutive months."
Training: "Supervised [N] apprentices on blow-dry and basic colour; signed off salon hygiene checklists."
Barber, colourist, and hotel salon variants
Barber: fades, hot towel, beard sculpture, clipper systems, walk-in vs book. Keep it men’s grooming — do not pad with unused ladies-colour menus.
Colour specialist: formulas, correction, balayage volume, brand educator days if real.
Hotel / cruise salon: brand standards, discretion, mixed guest nationalities, duty-manager escalation — closer to hospitality tone with hair credentials still first.
Common mistakes
Instagram-only portfolios with no parseable CV for group applications.
Claiming educator or specialist status after a one-day brand workshop.
Hiding apprenticeship years as if they were senior stylist years.
Multi-column design PDFs that break Indeed Easy Apply, Workday, or Seek uploads.
Is a hairstylist resume the same as a cosmetologist resume?
In US hiring, hairstylist is the floor title and licensed cosmetologist is the state-board class many Indeed ads require. Put both when true: “Licensed cosmetologist / senior hairstylist.” Outside the US, hairdresser plus the local certificate is the usual pair.
How do I write a hairstylist resume for Indeed?
Lead with state license and Saturday chair volume, name color systems you can run in a tryout, and export a single-column file. Multi-column Canva PDFs often break Indeed Easy Apply.
What should a licensed barber put on a resume?
Barber license class, fade and beard services you take unsupervised, walk-in vs booked volume, and hygiene logs. Do not pad unused women’s color menus. See the barber resume example.
