How to write a cover letter that matches your resume

Australian cover letter examples, openings that name the role, and a short structure that pairs with your DocuResume profile — not a generic template paragraph.

Key takeaway

A cover letter earns attention when it names the team, the problem, and one proof point already on your CV.

Cover letter examples dominate search because most applicants paste the same three vague paragraphs. Hiring managers in Australia still open letters for graduate programs, government selection criteria, and roles where culture fit matters — but they skim fast.

Action

Write from facts already on your resume. DocuResume’s cover letter builder pulls achievements from your master profile so the letter never invents a story your CV cannot defend in an interview.

A simple structure that works

Action

1) Opening: name the role and one reason you care about this employer. 2) Proof: one or two bullets rewritten as sentences with a metric or scope. 3) Fit: skills or domain language from the job ad you can honestly claim. 4) Close: availability and a clear ask for a conversation.

Action

Keep it to half a page or ~250–350 words unless the employer asks for selection-criteria responses. Longer is not more persuasive.

Australia-specific tips

Use Australian spelling (organise, analyse) when applying to AU employers. Address the hiring manager by name when the posting lists one; otherwise "Dear Hiring Manager" is fine — avoid outdated gender guesses.

Government and APS roles often need criterion-by-criterion answers. Treat those as a separate document built from the same profile facts, not a fluffy cover letter.

Pair letter and resume

Export both from DocuResume so titles, dates, and metrics match. If the letter claims "cut reporting time by 40%", that bullet must exist on the CV. Then autofill the employer portal with the same profile.
